Punctured your tyre? Repair it the British Standard way

Imagine a situation where you’re going on a long drive with your friends or family, steering and swaying your car merrily through hilly terrain. Just then your speed gets hampered and you get down only to find it punctured. Or maybe a situation when you’re navigating your car through the usual traffic jam to reach your office on time, and just then you get stuck at a place due to a puncture in one of your tyres.

Now a puncture is the worst thing that you can discover in the tyre repair Wellingborough of your car. The first thing that you’d like to do is, get it repaired. However, punctures must be fixed the right way so that they don’t create any trouble for you later. You must be an informed driver and should know the right and wrong way to repair a puncture. As this might save you from some nasty accidents later on.

What should you know about puncture repair?

Well, punctures mainly occur due to sharp objects like glass shards, screws or nails scattered on the roads. There’s a norm to be followed for repairing punctures
.First of all, a puncture can be repaired if it’s less than 5mm in diameter.

.If the central portion of the tread has been damaged, only then a puncture can be repaired.

.Just ensure that the mechanic first removes the tyre and inspects it thoroughly before carrying out any kind of repair.

.The airtight inner liner of the tyre should be established again.

.Make sure the place of the tyre which was torn by the object is filled during the repair.
Puncture repair mechanisms

Punctures can be repaired in three ways -

.Use of tyre string in external repair

.Use of repair patch in internal repair

.Use of a plug and repair patch in internal repair as a combination.

The last kind of repair is also called a mushroom repair. This is the only best way to repair your tyre, as the damaged area of the tyre gets sealed completely. The British Standard Institution has specified a procedure for cheap tyres Wellingborough repairs and it’s known by the name of BS AU 159. Let’s understand it in detail here.

When can a tyre be repaired?
Tyres can only be repaired -

.if the punctured area has a diameter of 5mm or even lesser than that.

.if the punctured area lies in between the shoulder of the tyres, which is the central portion of the tread, then also it can be mended.

Steps covered in BS AU 159

Here’s a stepwise guide for the repair -
1.Inspect the tyre thoroughly before repairing it. This is only possible when it is removed from the wheel.

2.Check scrupulously and mark the damaged area.

3.Next, the mechanic will use a 6mm carbide mill cutter and prepare a channel for the puncture.

4.The same process will be repeated, this time, towards the inward side of the tyre. By this time, the channel should be free of any kind of resistance on the mill cutter.

5.Now clean a larger part of the tyres than the one required for the puncture repair. You can use a pre-buff cleaner and then a repair scraper for the same. All the mould releasing agents should also be removed in this process.

6.Now, mark an outline on the inner side, while holding the patch firmly in position.

7.It’s time to smoothen the inner liner beyond the marked area which should be around 5mm. This is done with the help of a buffing rasp. After the buffing, the ribs should be flattened enough to leave a napped finish.

8.Once the above process is done, irrelevant material like rubber, fluffed cords and wire particles should be removed properly.

9.Next is the turn for a vulcanising accelerator solution to be applied on the buffed area and puncture channel.

10.Now, slide in the plug and tyre repair Wellingborough patch into the puncture channel.

11.Tug off both the things towards the outside of the tyre.

12.Now, use a tyre stitcher and roll the reverse of the patch from the centre to the outer side. This is going to remove any excess air bubbles, making sure that the contact between the patch and the inner liner is even strengthened.

13.Use a sealant to lock the buffed area and the combination tyre patch and the plug base, while exposing the sealant at the inner liner.

14.Finally, clip the combination tyre repair patch and plug with the tyre tread. Fix the tyre back to the wheel and fill in the air to the correct pressure.

So, next time you take your car to the repair centre, make sure it’s according to the British standards and nothing else beyond that. Only then your cheap tyres Wellingborough can enjoy the longevity.

Tyre purchasing guidelines

All You Need To Know Before Purchasing Tyres

As we know tyres are vehicles’ most important safety feature. The strongest engine, brakes and advanced anti-skid system are held only by the tyre’s grip on the road. Firstly, you should identify the right tyre size and the load index & the speed rating before choosing the right tyre to the wheel. Here, we have provided a complete tyre purchasing guidelines for the readers’ purpose so that it would help them to explore their options.

The handling and the performance of a vehicle are considered based on the tyres. And above all, they are the only contact of the vehicle with the road. Hence, while buying a set of new tyres, multiple factors should be considered such as your budget, the region and your driving style.

What are the core requirements?

When choosing new tyres, be ensured that they are compatible with your vehicle. You may see a list of compatible tyre types in the documentation and owner’s manual. It is strongly recommended that the same Tyres Wellingborough on each wheel should be used because it is important to maintain uniformity for excellent performance and control.

Tyre size is given as width, diameter and height-to-width aspect ratio. And, the load of the vehicle should be supported by the tyres and this capacity is known as “The load index”. Look at the index to conclude the weight, then multiply it by the number of tyres to get the total load supported.

“S” letter on the sidewall of the tyre denotes the speed rating and it is the maximum speed that the tyre is capable of supporting. Remember that the speed rating should be at least as high as your vehicle’s maximum. Do not forget that tyres with higher maximum speed are prone to quicker tread wear. Check the sidewall for other information such as safety code, association icon and size. They will tell you whether those tyres are approved for your country and meet out common quality standards or not.

Tyres & Types

Driving conditions do not remain same throughout the year. So, before buying a new set of tyres, you should consider the area where you live. Based on your weather condition you may determine whether you want to swap between summer and winter or all-season tyres.

A tread pattern designed for winter tyres is effective on slush and snow. They can easily bear freezing temperatures. Most significantly, winter tyres provide improved handling and shorter braking distance on snowy and icy conditions.

In summer tyres, you may expect excellent road grip, shorter braking distance on dry roads, handling and can handle slippery roads followed by heavy rain.

Finally, when considering all-season tyres from Continental Tyres Wellingborough, they are absolute to work in various conditions. All-season tyres are the best alternatives for the regions where temperature occasionally fall below freezing point. These tyres provide safety and top performance. Top of all, drivers can save their time, money and efforts required for seasonal tyre changes.

Some types of tyres are as follows:

Summer tyres:
These tyres are commonly referred to as the standard tyres. These tyres are designed in such a way that they offer the performance of the highest quality. These tyres are the first preference of the drivers living in conditions where the average temperature remains above 7 degrees as the hard rubber compound of these tyres ensures stability and grip on the road. Resistance against aquaplaning makes it a must-have tyre during summers. Famous manufactures of summer tyres include Dunlop, Continental, Goodyear, Bridgestone Tyres Wellingborough customers can ask for at the nearest tyres stores.

 All-season tyres:
These tyres Wellingborough are manufactured by mixing the technology of both summers and winter tyres. As the name suggests these tyres offer adequate performance all year round irrespective of the weather conditions. All season tyres have asymmetric tread pattern to suffice winter traction needs and excellent summer performance. It is essential to understand that these tyres are not developed in the same way as seasonal tyres. They can offer only average performance during extreme weather conditions.

 Winter tyres:
These tyres are designed in such a way that they have a large number of sipes and grooves. These sipes and grooves prove very important in offering great traction and grip during wet and snowy conditions. Due to the presence of increased ratio of softer rubber compound these tyres also have the capacity of remaining flexible when there is a drop in the temperatures.

 Run Flat tyres:
The technology of these tyres ensures the safety of a person if his/her vehicle suffers a puncture while driving. The walls of these tyres are thick and reinforced in comparison to any regular tyre. This helps an individual to drive for a short distance of around 50 miles even after a puncture.

 High-performance tyres:
These tyres have been optimised to offer exceptionally quick response and improved grip. These tyres also can cope with high-speed driving. These tyres are specifically designed for people that love speed.

 Energy Saving tyres:
While manufacturing these tyres a special technology is used that reduces the rolling resistance of the tyres. This further leads to a reduction in fuel consumption. Additionally, these tyres also decrease CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

 Budget tyres:
These tyres are an attractive option for people who cannot afford to purchase premium tyres. The only advantage this tyre offers to the customer is the lower initial purchase price. Part-Worn Tyres advantages, Challenges and Guidelines

Part-Worn Tyres advantages, Challenges and Guidelines

Thinking to buy new tyres, or an extra tyre before going on a long journey and your pocket poses a challenge in terms of cost. The best option in such a scenario is to buy part-worn tyres. Part-worn tyres are used up tyres ready for sale again. These are cheaper than the branded new tyre which makes them a good choice for saving your money.

 Advantages

The main advantage of choosing part worn tyres is that they are cheaper. Part-worn tyres have lower costs than new set, regardless of whether the pre-owned set is in extraordinary condition. This allows you to pay for additional items like the alignment and balancing that will make tyres keep going for a significantly longer period on the road.

Generally, part worn tyres Wellingborough are imported from countries like Germany where the legal tread depth is greater than the specifications in the UK. So these tyres have still the proper tread depth suitable for the UK’s driving conditions. Getting a branded quality new tyre may be expensive and if your driving preferences are short distances, or you drive mostly on urban roads then the best option would be to go for part-worn tyres.

 Challenges

Although buying part - worn tyres are a beneficial way to save your money, it is only wise when you get them in good condition and routinely inspect them.

Despite saving money, you can face many challenges while using part-worn tyres for your vehicle. The most common one is these tyres are not suitable for long mileage travel as they already hold patches and thus they can pose risks of wear out or punctures. The next thing is stopping distance.  This is a real challenge that you should be ready to face. Unlike new tyres, there is no 8 mm tread depth, these part-worn tyres have around 3 mm tread depth which increases the minimum stopping distance and thus extra control is needed to stop the vehicle. At last, a serious challenge for you is to handle the vehicle when there is any hazard that occurred in part-worn tyres like a sudden blowout, puncture, sidewall breakage, and so on.

Guidelines or standards of usages in the UK

The majority of UK drivers show keen interest to purchase part-worn tyres as an act of saving their money. The part worn tyre selling is legal in the UK but the vendors are restricted to follow certain standards. The first thing is that the part-worn tyres ought to be in good condition, which implies no lumps in the sidewall and no big cuts in the tread. Next to that, there should not be any structural defects and cords visible in them. In addition to all these a part-worn tyre should have minimum 2mm tread depth and also need to hold 4mm "PART-WORN" text on them in sidewalls.

If you are buying part-worn tyre sets make sure to check these standards, this would help you a lot to get good condition tyres that make your travel safe.
